On Friday, March 22, 2013, 7:30 PM, Free admission, artist and experimental geographer, Trevor Paglen, will make a rare appearance to discuss his latest project, “The Last Pictures,” that was presented originally by Creative Time in NYC. It is a related event to the current exhibition, “Free Enterprise: The Art of Citizen Space Exploration,” which includes several works by Paglen.

Artist Trevor Paglen will discuss his most recent ground-breaking project, The Last Pictures. Paglen is an artist, writer, and experimental geographer whose work deliberately blurs lines between social science, contemporary art, journalism, and other disciplines to construct unfamiliar, yet meticulously researched ways to see and interpret the world around us. His most recent project is The Last Pictures, a project presented by Creative Time, which is a collection of 100 images to be placed on permanent media and launched into space on EchoStar XVI, as a repository available for future civilizations (alien or human) to find. One of the images selected is by Ansel Adams from UCR ARTSblock?s California Museum of Photography’s permanent collection.

Complete exhibition is up until Saturday, March 23, when you can see XCOR items. Thereafter, the section at Culver Center of the Arts & Sweeney Art Gallery closes, while the sections continue next door at California Museum of Photography through April 20 and May 18. Gravitational Pull closes this weekend!

Gravitational Pull features a selection of photographs of the moon and space from the California Museum of Photography’s permanent collection. Included in the exhibition are a photograph by Ansel Adams, stereo cards by Keystone View Company, and snapshots made by an anonymous photographer while watching the Apollo 11 launch and moon landing. Together, these works illustrate the public’s fascination with the moon as an object of beauty, science, and history. closes March 16, 2013.

Joanna Szupinska-Myers, the new Curator for the California Museum of Photography in the ARTSblock is inspired and intrigued by the Trieste Constructivist Cabinet, involved in ARTSblock’s latest exhibition.

“I love the Trieste Constructivist Cabinet, a project conceived in 1927 by the artists Edvard Stepančič, Avgust Černigoj, Giorgio Carmelich, and Josip Vlah. A photograph of the suspended installation is currently on view as part of the exhibition Free Enterprise at the California Museum of Photography, where it greets visitors as the earliest precedent for gravity-free art,” says Szupinska-Myers.

No film this weekend at ARTSblock!

But during the last few months the Culver Screening Series, which screens independent, foreign-language, alternative, and significant Hollywood films in our own theater every Friday and Saturday at 7pm has shown these Academy Award nominees and winners: Beasts of the Southern Wild, 5 Broken Cameras, Searching for Sugar Man, and Moonrise Kingdom. Culver also screened Sigur Rós: Fjögur píanó with director Alma Har’el present, and Amores Perros withfilm editor, Luis Carballar.

A few terrific films coming up: The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, March 15/16. A mini Space Series, March 21, 22, 23.

FREE ENTERPRISE: The Art of Citizen Space Exploration – Docent Tour and Demonstration

Here’s your chance to view the current exhibition at the ARTSblock, “Free Enterprise: The Art of Citizen Space Exploration.” It is the first contemporary art exhibition in the U.S. to explore implications of civilian space travel which represents a major political and cultural shift away from sponsorship by the federal government and toward a free-market, private enterprise model.

While you’re there, be sure to visit one of the featured art works from the exhibition- Carrie Paterson’s “Homesickness Kit.” Gluck Fellows, Nick Lowe and Pejman Shojaei will be on hand to talk about this body of work and offer demonstrations of the kit itself. Artist Carrie Paterson has developed perfumes for “Homesickness Kits” for future space travelers to mitigate the psychological and physiological discomfort of space travel with time-lapse scent-journeys for both the space tourist and astronaut. “Homesickness Kits” are designed to counter-act feelings of unease, panic, or claustrophobia with scent memory-triggers related to important plants on Earth. These palliatives can be custom-tailored to passengers on sub-orbital flights or come as standard offerings to all passengers, much like airsick bags are provided on all airlines.

What’s the difference between a space suit helmet and a bubble?

Explore bubble possibilities with “Space Time Bubbles” at the ARTSBlock! Participants will build their own bubble wand and then create a constellation of floating bubbles with it. One bubble wand per participant.

Space Time Bubbles is an ARTSblock First Sunday event and is supported by the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts at UC Riverside. Ed Beardsley aka THE MAN is getting some love from Inland Empire Magazine this upcoming March issue! Keep an eye out for this gorgeous man and his featured article in IE Magazine.

ED BEARDSLEY: THE PROVOCATEUR The self-styled “old Bohemian” painter and one-time arts dean recalls his friendship with musician Frank Zappa, his stealth launch of the UCR/California Museum of Photography (with a little help from Ansel Adams) and getting in trouble with the John Birch Society. As told to JEANNE BOYER.

At University of California, Riverside, Beardsley both taught as a member of the Studio Art faculty and was Dean of the Division of Fine Arts in the College of Humanities. In the 60s and 70s, Beardsley was also associated with the Southern California vanguard music scene. A close friend of Frank Zappa, one of Beardsley’s paintings was used as the debut album cover by Alice Cooper, a band that Zappa had signed with his Reprise Records label in 1968. While Ed has always been a painter, he understood the importance of establishing a major photography institution and he reached out to such photographers as Joe Deal and such interdisciplinary artists as James Turrell to help initiate the California Museum of Photography.

Taken as a prisoner of war in 1940, Cartier-Bresson escaped on his third attempt in 1943, and subsequently joined an underground organization to assist prisoners and escapees. In 1945, the year this photograph was taken, he photographed the liberation of Paris.

Apparently now NASA plans on listening to the amateur astronomers who found the meteor hurdling toward us last week. Russia took a pretty crazy hit from the meteor debris just one day before our meteor issue, but luckily ours just passed us by. Phew!

As NASA now scrambles to try and keep us safe here on Earth and prevent future issues like this one, we are looking outside of this planet. Why not start to imagine which other planet you’d like to live on? It could be a reality sometime soon! Artist group, e-team explores life in Moon and Mars here at the ARTSblock for the Free Enterprise exhibition! Come check it out! It’s delightful!

“For the first time I know what love is; what friends are; and what art should be.

Love is a seeking for a way of life; the way that cannot be followed alone; the resonance of all spiritual and physical things. Children are not only of flesh and blood — children may be ideas, thoughts, emotions. The person of the one who is loved is a form composed of a myriad mirrors reflecting and illuminating the powers and thoughts and the emotions that are within you, and flashing another kind of light from within. No words or deeds may encompass it.

Friendship is another form of love — more passive perhaps, but full of the transmitting and acceptance of things like thunderclouds and grass and the clean granite of reality.

Art is both love and friendship, and understanding; the desire to give. It is not charity, which is the giving of Things, it is more than kindness which is the giving of self. It is both the taking and giving of beauty, the turning out to the light the inner folds of the awareness of the spirit. It is the recreation on another plane of the realities of the world; the tragic and wonderful realities of earth and men, and of all the inter-relations of these.

I wish the thundercloud had moved up over Tahoe and let loose on you; I could wish you nothing finer.
